HOW THE IN:COLOUR CERTIFICATE HAS HELPED MY BUSINESS

Elaine MacKenzieFiona Humberstone – Flourish

Fiona Humberstone founded the Guildford Printing.com franchise focussing on delivering creative graphic design and quality print. Following five years of building a successful reputation as business branding experts, Fiona then founded Flourish design and marketing agency alongside her Printing.com. business. Fiona completed the Colour psychology for design and communication course with two of her team, Caroline and Chloe in 2009.

Why did you and your team decide to do the course?
I’ve always felt that as a design and branding agency we’re pretty intuitive about colour. If I’m honest, I didn’t think I needed any more help on the subject. But I’d met Bernay and was impressed by her enthusiasm and passion for her subject; and I saw the Colour psychology for design and communication course as a good way of building team spirit whilst learning at the same time.

Has the course influenced the way you think about and work with colour?
I’ve been completely blown away by what we’ve learned. It has short-cut how we communicate internally (the colour personalities give us clues as to not just the tones and hues but also the shapes and textures the client will like) and it’s made us more efficient. I now get frustrated when the new team members need to be talked the “long way round” to ensure absolute consistency and integrity: those of us that have done the course just “get it”!

How has the course helped you to improve your business?
It’s helped us work more efficiently as a team and I find we “get” to places faster. It also really seems to impress our clients and it’s great to have something concrete in addition to our intuition and experience. I’ll definitely be signing up my new recruits. Commercially it’s had big advantages. We have a clear lead over our competitors and clients find it fascinating.

“Bernay is a fantastic tutor. Inspiring, knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. I would recommend the course for other creatives without hesitation”

Graphic Designer -  David Walters, FREEFLOW

David Walters

David Walters set up graphic and website design company, Freeflow in 2001 and has used colour psychology for communication in the majority of his design work since taking the course in 2006.

Please tell me about your business
Freeflow is a graphic and website design company, but also I am a Feng Shui consultant. Bernay’s course has aided me in looking at the suitable colour schemes for people I consult for in respect to decorating etc..

What prompted you to take the in:colour course?
To improve my design work primarily.

How has your business changed since becoming a certified in:colour consultant?
The business model has not changed, but the emphasis on producing more efficient and effective design work for my clients is a very good USP.

How well does the colour consultancy fit in with your other work?
Only Feng Shui as other work used colour psychology and fits in with my methods of determining which colours are suitable for which areas in a property, refining the choice further depending on my clients palette.

What does the future hold for your business?
My businesses are growing year by year with more emphasis on using colour psychology wherever applicable.

“The emphasis on producing more efficient and effective design work for my clients
is a very good USP.”

Mary Boston - Firefly Interiors

Mary established her London based business Firefly Interiors in June 2007 and anticipates that the knowledge gained on the Colour Psychology for Interior Design Course will be central to the continued growth of her business.

What prompted you to take the in:colour course?

Although I felt that I already had a good understanding of colour and its uses, I wanted to extend my knowledge about the applications of colour and the effect it can have on individuals psychologically. I took the course with the intention of finding another string for my bow, and I was also keen to learn more about colour personality and how to apply this in an interior design context, and as such, this course was perfect.

How has the course helped you to improve your business?

Delving into the theory of colour to the extent that we did has enabled me to explain why certain combinations of colour may have a very specific effect on an individual.  My business was very young, and although on the face of it it didn’t change much due to the course, underneath, my level of confidence rose enormously and I now feel very confident advising clients on how to use colour, something which many people can be very timid with.  I can help them be bolder without fear of making an expensive mistake, and that can be of huge value to people.

“Since completing the course I have found my confidence in colour specification has grown hugely and I am far better able to advise clients on how to incorporate colours that will support them and their families to the max”.
